… And another year has passed – and 'Hammerhead' is here!
Nikki and I have been hard at work in the studio since the last blog (over twelve months ago). We have been refining some of the tracks that were developed in 2018 – as well as pulling together some new songs.
As time rolled by, it was becoming clearer that a signature ‘Cloudbase’ sound was becoming evident – the use of heavy rhythmic, layered keyboards; Nikki’s smooth yet powerful vocals; my guitar overlays. This caused us to reflect and revisit some of the original work like ‘Wanna be free’ and ‘These three words’ (which turned into what we call the ‘dark edit’). These songs simply didn’t sit well with the new family of songs like ‘Forgive me’, ‘I like the way you make me feel’ and ‘I want you’. The outcome is, 'Hammerhead' – a selection of six songs over fifty-plus minutes – that crystallise the 'Cloudbase' sound… dark, direct, hypnotic.
Live performance in 2019 didn’t happen as planned/hoped either. We just didn’t feel the sound was refined enough and we simply weren’t ready to perform them. But, only yesterday evening, we ran through a set consisting of five tracks off the album and we feel that we are ready for some intimate shows in the very near future (watch this space).
On the topic of upcoming shows, Andy will be joining us on keyboards from time to time – and it is great to have him back adding more of that organic sound to fill the room.
